What is Legionella?

The Legionella Bacteria are responsible for many diseases called Legionellosis and the most recognisable of these diseases is the Legionairres Disease, which is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia and everyone is susceptible to infection.  The higher risk categories are:

• People over 45 years of age
• Smokers and heavy drinkers
• People suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease
• Diabetes, lung & heart disease
• Anyone with an impaired immune system.

Why do people get Legionairres Disease?

Legionella bacteria is found in natural water sources, however conditions are harsh and concentration of the bacteria is too minimal to cause any major harm once inhaled via water droplets, however in purpose built water systems the bacteria is given ideal conditions in which to multiply and increase its concentration and when inhaled via water droplets causes disease as described above.

Why do I need a Risk Assessment?

Legionella Bacteria can be found in purpose-built water systems, hot and cold water system and spa pools.  If conditions are favourable the Legionella Bacteria multiply to an unsafe level, it is therefore important to control the risk by introducing appropriate measures as outlined in Approved Code of Practice Legionairres Disease - The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems.
